Over art2stay

Art2stay is een digitaal platform voor 'illegale' kunstenaars, een plek waar zij hun kunst en verhaal kunnen delen met elkaar en een groot publiek. Een website die zowel als galerie en als statement probeert illegaliteit in een ander licht te bezien. Wat voor invloed heeft het leven zonder verblijfsvergunning op de geest? Wat voor mensen zijn het die er voor kiezen buiten de gevestigde structuren te leven? Wat kunnen ‘illegalen’ als buitenstaanders ons over onze samenleving vertellen?

Art2stay biedt ‘ongedocumenteerden’ de kans om hun kunst te tonen in een online galerie en eventueel toch anoniem te blijven. De deelnemers wordt ook gevraagd te reageren op uiteenlopende thema’s. Deze reacties, in beeld, geluid, tekst en video, zullen gepubliceerd worden in wisselende exposities op art2stay.nl. Sommige deelnemers waren al ‘kunstenaar’ voor ze in Nederland kwamen, voor anderen werd kunst een manier om mentaal te overleven. Ook op art2stay, de verhalen van een paar mensen die lange tijd illegaal in Nederland hebben geleefd en die kunnen reflecteren op wat die periode voor hen en hun werk betekend heeft.

Voor art2stay werkt documentairemaker Suzanne Raes samen met crossmedia projectontwikkelaar Loes de Vos. Door hun talenten te bundelen hebben zij een bijzondere, dynamische plek op het internet gecreëerd. Een plek waar verborgen schoonheid en verhalen voor ons worden onthuld.

Art2stay is a digital platform for artists who live in the Netherlands illegally. It is a place where they can share their art and stories with each other and a wide audience. It functions as both a gallery and a statement, and attempts to look at illegality in another light. What kind of influence can life without a residence permit have on someone’s spirit? What kinds of people choose to live outside the establishment? What can illegal immigrants tell us about the society we live in?

Art2stay offers people without papers the chance to exhibit their art in an online gallery while simultaneously remaining anonymous. The participants have also been asked to react on a variety of themes. Their reactions, expressed in image, sound, text and video, will be published in temporary exhibitions on the art2stay website: www.art2stay.nl. Some participants were already artists before they came to the Netherlands, while for others art became a means of emotional survival. art2stay will also reveal the stories of artists who lived here illegally for an extended period of time and who can now reflect on the impact that had on them and their work.

Art2stay is an initiative of documentary filmmaker Suzanne Raes and crossmedia project developer Loes de Vos. By combining their talents, they have created a special, dynamic place on the World Wide Web – a place where hidden beauty and stories can be unveiled to us.
